Wednesday 24th September 2014 is Heritage Day in South Africa.
As always, the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation host some great tours around this time. This year, they are starting on the weekend before Heritage Day (Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st of September 2014). Download the program here for all the details and starting times of the tours. All tours are priced at R50 and start at various times leaving from the Holy Family College at 40 Oxford Road Parktown.
Then on Wednesday the 24th September 2014, there is a special ‘off the beaten track’ Soweto tour. This tour departs from the Sunnyside Park Hotel at 2 York Road Parktown at 8am. Download the brochure with details and costs here.
I highly recommend these tours as they give an insight into the history of Johannesburg that no book can. The tours are well researched and presented by highly knowledgeable volunteers of the JHF (previously the Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust). Some them have also been around for as long as the buildings and houses on the tours (okay, I’m exaggerating a bit here) and as such remember interesting details long forgotten. There is a saying that if one sticks around for long enough, one can see the landscape changing…
